Founded in 1923 by Christine Sheldon, Anne Hindle, and Kathleen Bird, three teachers who left Wycombe Abbey to start a school of their own, Benenden sits across 250 acres of Kent parkland, and is known for a culture it describes as stretch without stress, one that asks a great deal of each girl while keeping the atmosphere around her warm, steady, and happy.

Academic Profile
In the Fourth and Upper Fourth, girls at Benenden follow the Benenden Diploma, a bespoke, enquiry-led curriculum that develops curiosity and independent thinking, before taking their GCSEs. In the Sixth Form they study A Levels, and Benenden Seniors proceed to a wide range of leading universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.
Co-Curricular Life
Sport has a genuinely strong presence at Benenden, supported by its own sports centre, and the school's Kent parkland setting allows for a level of outdoor and equestrian activity not easily matched elsewhere. The performing arts are a particular strength, anchored by the Centenary Buildings opened in 2022, which house a purpose-built music school of more than twenty specialist practice rooms, recording suites, and a concert hall whose acoustics have drawn performances from the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Drama has its own professional theatre and studio, and the school's choirs and ensembles perform regularly beyond Benenden, in venues that have included Westminster Abbey, St Paul's Cathedral, and Canterbury Cathedral, with art flourishing alongside them in the same settled, creative community.
Admissions Essentials
Girls join Benenden at 11, 12, or 13, with a smaller number of competitive places at 14 and in the Sixth Form. For 11+ entry into Year 7, registration is recommended by the end of Year 5. Candidates attend a Preview Assessment Day at the school, a day of enquiry-based activities, an interview, and a short creative writing exercise, and the school takes up a reference from the current school. Candidates then sit the ISEB Common Pre-Test in the autumn term of Year 6, with firm offers made in December. For 13+ entry, registration is recommended around three years ahead, with candidates attending a preview weekend that includes an English and Maths assessment, an informal interview, and an overnight stay in a boarding house, followed by the ISEB Common Pre-Test in the autumn term of Year 6. At both 11+ and 13+ entry, scholarships are available across academic, music, art, drama, design, and sport.
